Pre-visit Checklist
To avoid feeling uncomfortable or anxious about seeing a gynecologist, prepare yourself for the visit:
- Make a list of the questions you want to ask your gynecologist. Remember: no question is too trivial to put on that list.
- Prepare information ahead of time. Remember the date of your last period, which can help your doctor determine when you should start on the Pill. If this is your first visit, your doctor will also ask when you had your first period.
- Be sure to mention any medical conditions you may have. Also find out about your family’s medical history, such as cardiovascular disease, high-blood pressure, diabetes or migraines. These are risk factors that a doctor needs to consider.
- Dress in comfortable and practical clothing. Wear shoes that you can slip on and off easily. If you prefer to keep your clothes on during the examination, wear a long blouse or T-shirt and a long skirt.
- For support, you may ask a friend to accompany you.
- Avoid having intercourse for 24 hours before your gynecological examination, especially if it includes a Pap smear test.
- Use only mild soap and water if you shower or bathe before your appointment. Avoid douching or using powders and creams around your vagina, as these may affect results of the examination.
