Tips for New Users

Mercilon is a convenient, reversible and reliable contraception. If taken properly, it is more than 99 per cent effective.

You need to develop a routine that helps you to remember to take Mercilon at the same time every day. Try taking Mercilon while doing a daily chore. Take it after brushing your teeth, for example, and keep your pills next to your toothbrush. Until you’ve perfected your routine, set an alarm on your watch or cell phone as a reminder.

Here are some other suggestions:

  • Take Mercilon at night so you can double-check the next morning whether you have taken your pill.
  • Always replenish your supply of Mercilon ahead of time. This not only prevents unscheduled breaks in between each cycle pack, but it also means there will be extra pills if one gets dropped down the sink.
  • Bring extra Mercilon packs on vacations, just in case it’s difficult to find replacements at the holiday destination.
  • Each Mercilon blister pack labels its pills with the days of the week. To keep track of your cycle, make sure you’re taking the appropriate pill (the “Monday” pill on Mondays, for example).
  • Always start a new pack the day after the seven hormone-free days, even if you didn’t get your period or if you’re still bleeding.
  • You should always start a new Mercilon pack on the same day of the week. That means if you start a pack on Monday, you should start the next pack on a Monday too.
  • Always have a barrier form of contraception – such as condoms – on hand, just in case you run out of or forget your pills.
  • If you suffer from vomiting or diarrhea, your body may need more time to adjust to the Pill. Use a backup birth control method for the rest of your cycle. Also, remember that vomiting or diarrhea has the same effect as missing a pill.
  • Always tell your doctor you are taking Mercilon if he wants to prescribe you medication. Ask if the new prescription will have an impact on Mercilon’s effects.
  • Always finish your current pack first before stopping or switching to another brand, and inform your doctor of your decision.
  • Learn more about emergency contraception, just in case you forget your pills more than once and don’t use a backup birth control method during sex. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about what options are available.
